Knowing the fluid level is one thing. Oil operators tend to be more curious about the gas-free liquid above their pumps (dead oil). Therefore sonoecho™ features a wireless pressure sensor that is used to record surface casing pressure and pressure build-up as soon as the valve to the casing flowline is closed. Based on the tubing-casing annulus volume being pressured up by the inflowing gas the sonoecho™ software automatically calculates the gas flow rate and the gas content within the liquid column in the well representing the dead liquid column.
Only this dead liquid column contributes to the hydrostatic back pressure that exists on the formation. The hydrostatic back pressure corresponds to the producing well bottom hole pressure (PBHP). The lower the PBHP value, the greater the pressure drop in the reservoir and the higher the production of the well.
Furthermore, the downhole pump is intended for pumping liquids, no gases. The dead liquid height above the pump indicates how much pumpable liquid the pump can produce. Even if fluid level examination shows that the top of the fluid level is 1,000 feet above the pump, the amount of pumpable fluid the pump can deliver may only be 100 feet if the well is producing a lot of gas. Knowing this fact makes a big difference in interpreting how efficiently the well is producing the reservoir and in concluding what changes (if any) should be made to optimize the well.
Another valuable use of the pressure sensor is to acquire static bottom hole pressure and pump intake pressure (PIP).
As a potential source for ignition it has to be explosion proved and ATEX certified.
